1 YEAR OLD - well just a few weeks more

Now the children are back at school, we have had time to breathe following the summer holidays maker hubs which were very busy and fun-filled. Over this year we have learnt a lot about what the children want to do, how they want to do it and how everything can work. The children love the game-based learning approach. They also want a greater variety and more games.

So what do we do with what we have learnt? Quite a bit actually we are going to develop a whole lot more projects for each programming platform:

  • Scratch
  • Crumble
  • BBC Micro:bit
  • Game Maker
  • Lego Mindstorm
  • Python – moving onto the Raspberry Pi

These projects will not only test the children’s abilities but also also expand their creativity through building on existing projects.

Some of you may have seen new faces over the summer helping out when it has got busy or when coming in for sessions to see what we are all about. We are now going to take our staff and get them more familiar with the new and existing projects, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills to support the children attending the sessions.

We have now decided that a ratio of 1 staff member to 8 children (1:8) is a comfortable number this level of staffing. This ensures that each child gets the support they need and they do not wait to long for assistance. It means the group will always be kept small and comfortable for the children.

New Saturday Code Hub for Children and Adults (big kids)– starting 16th September 2017, 1.30pm to 3.00pm at Huntington School

We are now starting a Saturday Code Hub. This is for children 8 years upwards and for adults alike. There will be adults in one room and children in another room next door, ensuring safeguarding is in place for the children. If a parent and child want to attend together they can do so.

At the Saturday Code Hub, we will focus on the programming languages Scratch, BBC Micro:bit and Python, PHP/HTML/CSS. If you have a Raspberry Pi project you have been working on and its stalling because you need to learning more Python code then bring it along and we will see how we can help. We will see what you need to learn in order to get your project going again.

So it onwards with

  • lots of new build projects for the crumble

  • lots of new projects for the everyone to get stuck into

  • a guarantee of 1:8 staff to children ratio

and a whole lot more fun and inspiring learning!
